Hey Little Fishies!

Ah, I love spring.  With each pocket of warm weather, I've  tried to pack in as much outside time as possible.  Mostly it has been spent weeding and working in the yard... but last week Griff and I dusted off our fishing poles and spent an evening doing something much more fun and relaxing... FISHING!!!  We went up to Tibble Fork first. After enjoying the scenery, but not catching a single fish for an hour... we packed up and headed to the good old community pond, which in our case is just down the street at Highland Glen Park.  Those little stocked fish were sure hungry!  Every time Griff's salmon eggs hit the water, it was just a matter of a few minutes before he got a bite.  We threw them all back, but one of our neighbors ended up keeping a few.  She said when they cleaned them, their stomachs were all full of power bait.  Yuck!!!  After eating the same thing every meal at the hatchery their whole lives, they probably think power bait is the best thing ever!  How funny. :)  This was the perfect place to take kids... small fish, but who cares when there is lots of action for little hands!

Griff's first fish... the smallest and an albino.  I forgot to take pictures of the bigger ones... oops!

Jack was mostly a good little boy... just playing with his chain while Mommy helped find those ever elusive needle nose pliers for Daddy to get the hooks out of his fish.

My first little fish!

Auodad!!!

Ok, this is one of those posts that will gross some of you out... and it will make others laugh!  And a few of you may even be pumped.  :)  But this is me...

My brother, Matt, is one of my best friends and a cherished hunting buddy.  I was lucky to be born to a father who didn't hesitate to teach his daughter to hunt along with his son.  And I feel like I lucked out twice to have a brother who embraced me as the brother he never had. :)

Last February (2008), Matt and I headed out on a hunt we had never done before.  Our good friend, Rich Coles, invited us to hunt Aoudad (Barbary Sheep) in Texas.  They are an African sheep that was released into the wild in Texas 30+ years ago.  Since they are better adapted to the terrain, Aoudad are now infringing on the Desert Big Horn Sheep habitat.  So you can actually hunt them year round in Texas in an effort to keep them from overrunning the Desert Big Horns.

Anyway, it was an awesome hunt.  Auodad have amazing eye sight and are really smart.  I watched one ram tuck his horns behind a big rock when Rich was stalking his.  Our guides called them "Aoudini" because they seemed to be masters of the disappearing act.  I shot my 26 inch Auodad the second to last day of the hunt.  We each shot a few Javellena, as well.  It was so fun... even though I missed you, Griff!

A few days ago I finally got my Auodad back from the taxidermist.  Wahoo!!!!  It looks great.  I'm so excited to have it back.  So for those of you who didn't get grossed out by this post... come over and see it! :)

Matt's Javellena was huge!
Here's the end result...

Jack is 4 months!!!

(Thanks for the red sweatshirt Aunt Erie... don't I look cute in it?)

Well, actually he is a little over 4 months... I slacked on posting.

Our BIG MAC has turned into a skinny guy.  At his 4 month appointment, Jack measured 26.25 in long (90th percentile).  But he weighed in at only 14 lbs 3 oz (30th percentile).  What happened to my FAT baby?!

Jack survived his shots at the end of the appointment but was seriously a sad puppy for the next couple of days.  Every time I even bumped his legs, he would start to cry.  It was so sad!

Jack McConnell is seriously such a joy, though.  He is the smiliest guy.  And I love to watch him change and progress.  He does so many funny things right now.  Like, he always starts to fuss or cry when he realizes we are going to feed him.  Impatient little baby!  And  he loves this blue elephant in his crib.  He reaches for it before he even hits the mattress.  Then he falls asleep sucking it's foot or at least with his face pressed against it every night and most naps, too.  Jack is Daddy's boy... I have to admit, I am a little jealous sometimes.  But I love to watch them together.  To Jack, Griff is a walking circus!  Seriously, he hears Griff's voice and smiles immediately.  He knows entertainment is on the way.  He's not much of a snuggler.  It's like he is too worried he is going to miss something if he relaxes his head for even a second.  And Jack still LOVES the bath tub.  He kicks and splashes and smiles the whole time he is in the water.  I actually feel a little guilty getting him out and ruining his fun.  These last four months have been SO MUCH FUN!  I can't wait for all the rest. :)

We LOVE Easter!!!

A generous bunny that hides eggs and a goodie filled basket for you once a year... and no naughty or nice list? ... what's not to love?!  I for one LOVE Easter.  Ok, I LOVE all holidays!  This year, we started off the festivities by dying eggs with Matt and Amy.  Sadly, this is the only picture we got... but it was really fun.

Usually the Easter Bunny comes on Saturday in our family so we can go to the park and have a picnic complete with egg toss and egg roll (weather permitting), but this year I had to work... so the Easter Bunny postponed his arrival to Sunday.  So no picnic... bummer.  But we sure enjoyed our basket!

After we found our baskets, and Griff humored me and did an Easter Egg hunt with just the two of us (what a great husband), we had Resurrection Rolls for breakfast.  Erin calls them Easter Morning Rolls ... click here for an explanation and the recipe.

After going to church with Grandma and Grandpa Christensen, we had an Easter Egg hunt in their yard.  There were at least a million eggs.  I was impressed that Griff got Jack to pick a few up... but I think he will enjoy this part much more next year. :)  Chet LOVED the basketball eggs.  Kara had the most fun, though, and was very generous with finding eggs for Jack, too.

After a scrumptious dinner, Kara and Chet got a ride in the sleeping bag from their fun Grandma...

I loved this picture of Randy and Jack talking to Chet.  Randy really is the best grandpa.

What a great Easter.  Griff and I are so blessed!  Even with all the stresses, we have so much happiness in our lives.  When I studied abroad in Jerusalem, I had many opportunities to sit quietly in the Garden Tomb and think.  Every time I stood in the tomb, I felt sadness at Christ's death.  But as I would turn to go, my eyes would fall on the words posted on the door, "He is not here, for he is risen."  I knew it was true when I read those words, and I know it now.  All the sadness of His death is swallowed in the JOY of those words.  I testify that Christ has risen!    And I know that it is the greatest blessing in my life.   I'm so grateful for the opportunity to make my wrongs right.  Happy Easter everyone!

Zion National Park

Griff's parents invited us to "camp" with them in their trailer at Zions for spring break.  We were able to go down for three days, and it was awesome!!!  I hadn't been for probably ten years, and Griff had never been at all!  We seriously had so much fun.  Griff and I both love the outdoors... and I think our little man likes them, too.  :)  Hope you like pictures...

Randy and Greg made us some awesome dutch oven meals... seriously, we ate like kings.

Little JMac fit nicely in the tub. :)  I don't think he'll ever be satisfied with his crib again!

This is a Paiute that Cassidee and I met.  Now there's a chance to go steady... (wink, wink)

All the animals really liked Jack...

Our little trooper had a smile on his face almost the whole time.  What a good baby!

And we went on some amazing hikes.  My favorite was Angel's Landing.  The red rock is beautiful.  And after you clamber up the mountain (using chains for the last part), the peak offers an UNBELIEVABLE view.  I can't believe I had never done this hike before!  We also did the Emerald Pools and Riverside Walk, which were both really pretty, too.

This is my favorite picture of the trip.  No wonder Jack loves Grandpa so much! :)  (Please forgive me, Randy!)  Thanks for the awesome trip Randy and Cindy!

Ballerinas and Bedtime Stories

Treasures of the Ballet Russes

My Mom takes each daughter on a date each year to the ballet!  I seriously cherish this night spent with her.  She is such a wonderful person... a perfect mother and a great force for good in the world.  I am so proud of her.  And I love getting her all to myself at least this one night a year.  :)  We started the night by going to dinner at Gateway... yummy!  Then we headed off to Capital Theater for the ballet.  This year she invited me to Ballet Russes, which is a compilation of dances.  It was amazing!  Christopher Sellars was fabulous as the Prodigal Son.  Seriously, if you ever saw Brittany do sit jumps in high school... Christopher jumps like that.  Crazy high!  And the Polovetsian Dancers had beautiful, colorful costumes and vibrant choreography.  Christiana Bennet was my favorite, as usual.  But I really liked Kate Crews, too.  She was the hostess in Les Bliches, and she just radiated happiness.  I don't really know very much about the technicalities of ballet, but I love watching talented dancers... I can just feel their joy and passion for what they are doing.  It is inspiring!

Story Time!

Ok, I have been reading Jack books since he was a newborn... just because you're "suppose to" (and because it brings back good memories of my mom reading to me).  But honestly newborns can hardly stay awake long enough to eat, let alone to be read to!  And give me a break, like they have any idea what you're doing.  :)  But I've been plugging away anyway, mostly because I am afraid of losing the habit.  And I know it is good for babies to interact with you, hear voice inflection... all that stuff at those early ages.  So... this week, wahlah! Suddenly little JMac is interested! :)  He is very intent on the pictures, and the books that have pop-outs are simply irresistible.  It is pretty dang cute to look at him concentrating so hard on the pages.  And it is satisfying to finally  have this reading thing pay off. :)

Happy Happy Birthday Devin Dear...

Monday night we got together with Griff's family to celebrate the birth of his cute sister, Devin.  She loves Litza's Pizza in Salt Lake City, so every year that's where we go.  Yummy!  We sure love our Devin.  She is a sweet, happy person and deserves her best year yet!
Happy 29th Girl!

What a funny little face!
